Is your building covered?
Washington's Clean Building Performance Standard applies to most non-residential buildings over 20,000 sq ft and multifamily buildings over 20,000 sq ft.
Non-residential, over 50,000 sq ft
Must meet an energy use intensity (EUI) target.
| June 1, 2026 | Over 220,000 sq ft |
| June 1, 2027 | 90,001–220,000 sq ft |
| June 1, 2028 | 50,001–90,000 sq ft |
Non-residential 20,001–50,000 sq ft, and multifamily over 20,000 sq ft
No EUI target. Owners must benchmark energy use, adopt an Energy Management Plan and an Operations & Maintenance Program, and submit documentation to the state.
| July 1, 2027 | All Tier 2 buildings, then every 5 years |
Example: a 30,000 sq ft Tier 2 building could earn about $9,000 through the Early Adopter Incentive, or owe up to $9,000 for missing the deadline.
